Turn Your Clocks Back this Weekend

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It is that time of year when Daylight Saving Time ends so we turn our clocks back one hour as we head to bed on Saturday night. The good news is we all get an extra hour of sleep! This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and weather radios.

So where did Daylight Savings come from? Well, the idea came about as a way to add more sunlight in the afternoons. This would then allow farmers more time in the fields to harvest their crops. It also allowed local businesses to stay open later and make more money. Another reason was to save energy costs since you would not have to run lights but modern energy techniques have countered that. Recent studies suggest there really is not a good reason why we change our clocks. It has become more a nuisance than anything. I personally like the longer days in the summer and shorter days in the winter. However, going home in the dark after work takes a while to get used to. — First Alert 25 Meteorologist Conley Isom

Amazing Golf Putt

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I know this is more sports related but I wanted to share this with everyone. Friday was the Providence golf tournament out at Twin Rivers in Waco. The weather was really cold in the morning but it was a perfect day for golf. Our own news anchor, Bruce Gietzen, had the chance to sink a 60 foot putt for 10,000 dollars. You read that right! 10K for making a putt on the practice putting green. The putt was uphill with not much break. Below is the video of his attempt.

Talk about heart breaking! I get sick every time I watch it. To think, he was less than inch away from $10,000. Bruce took all in stride but will never forget how close he was to all that money! — First Alert 25 Meteorologist Conley Isom

Rain Dance 2.0

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

On Wednesday morning, Seth Kovar did a rain dance (check the post below) at the end of the morning show and it worked. Some places saw several inches of much needed rain. Since we have a slight chance for rain again on Thursday afternoon, I told Seth that he would need to do a rain dance again, especially for those who did not see any rain. This time around, yours truly and Loren Korn got in on the action. Hopefully it will work again and if it does, I think I am on to something! The Rain Dance!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

During Wednesday morning’s Good Morning Texas, my fellow co anchor Seth was talking about things we could do to make it rain. Some of the ideas were washing your car, forgetting your umbrellas, or watering your lawn. I mentioned doing a rain dance and by the end of the show, Seth was ready to do it. Below is his rain dance, so if you get rain this week, you can thank him! — First Alert 25 Meteorologist Conley Isom

Fourth of July Forecast

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

fireworksThe rain was nice and much needed earlier this week. However, mother nature is turning the faucets off and cranking the heat back up. All of this just in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend. We are forecasting high temperatures to be near 100 degrees starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend and into next week. Our 100 degree tracker stands at 14 (as of Wednesday) so get ready to add to that! A lot of us will be outside celebrating Independence day but be careful in the heat. Make sure to drink lots of water and wear the sun screen. What are your plans for the 4th? Let me know by submitting a comment using the links below. I have to work that day but plan to visit the in-laws on my dinner break for good food and good times! — First Alert 25 Meteorologist Conley Isom

Spring Begins Friday

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

springThe first day of spring falls on Friday, March 21st this year. This is when the sun sits directly over the equator as the northern hemisphere begins to tilt more towards the sun. Also, this is when you have equal amounts of daylight and night. The weather patterns will also start to transition leading to the beginning of the severe weather season. However, keep in mind it can always get cold, even as we head into April.

Have you ever tried balancing an egg on the first day of spring? This legend began in 1945 when Life magazine wrote an article about a Chinese ritual in which people stood eggs on end. The truth is if you can balance an egg on the first day of spring, you can balance an egg on any day. The sun’s position has nothing to do with the pull of gravity.

Spring Forward

Friday, March 6th, 2009

springforward-300x2021This weekend, daylight saving time begins at 2 AM Sunday morning. Why would you wait until exactly 2 AM Sunday to change your clocks? Anyways, before you go to bed Saturday, do not forget to change all your clocks. This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detector and replace them if needed.

Do you know why we change our clocks? It was actually created to allow for more leisure and outdoor time during the summer months. The sport of golf benefits the most, allowing more time to play. That is why I love the time change!Another benefit was to reduce energy use but that does not fit now with modern energy techniques. Retailers also found that the longer daylight created more customers to stop by, thus making more money. In fact, it was the National Association of Convenience Stores and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association that lobbied to extend Daylight Saving Time, which passed a few years ago. Funny Commercial

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The following is a sonic commercial that aired last year. I do not think it is in the rotation any more. When you watch it, you will see why it made me laugh, considering my job!
